LICHENS + PATRICK FARMER & CHRIS SUMMERLIN + GARETH HARDWICK
Lichens
Lichens is the solo vehicle for Robert Lowe, who plays bass and sings in 90 Day Men. Lowe's finger picked acoustic guitar sounded like he’s spent time pondering Fahey's legacy, but his looped, wordless vocals were reminiscent of Meredith Monk.
Patrick Farmer & Chris Summerlin
Drummer Patrick "Patch" Farmer is fast earning himself a reputation as one of the most respected and creative percussionists in the country right now. He has played with such varied folks as Dominic Lash, Christian Munthe, Jez Riley French, The Birmingham Improvisers Orchestra and the final line-up of Designer Babies as well as constantly turning out music on his own and as part of The Good Anna. He can alternate between playful, measured and inquisitive creation of sounds and huge waves of rhythmic drive that make him as entertaining to watch as he is to listen to. Guitarist Chris Summerlin is usually known for playing too loud in such rock bands as Lords, Wolves Of Greece and Reynolds. He has also played with Damo Suzuki, The Telescopes and Glenn Branca as well as making music on his own under the Last Of The Real Hardmen moniker. Patch and Chris have worked together in the past both as LOTRHM (most strangely opening up for Isis last year at their invitation) and with Chris occasionally joining The Good Anna for live work. The closest reference point for the music this pair make as a duo would be Jim White and Mick Turner's work outside the Dirty 3 as the Tren Brothers, albeit with the occasional slip into thick, fuzzed-up blow-outs.
Gareth Hardwick
Nottingham-based musician Gareth Hardwick creates music that is at once rich and minimalist, dense and subtle. By manipulating the natural tones of his guitar with effects and loops he can deform and reshape the sounds generated by his instrument until you're no longer sure what you're hearing - an organ, a voice, or no recognisable instrument… Between abstract sounds, fragile and delicate melodies reveal themselves to you; finding yourself lost in intricate textures you are suddenly awoken by an absence of structure or sound, of something that one can hold on to. Gareth's main influences are drawn equally from the work of fellow ambient composers Stars of the Lid, Growing and Andrew Chalk and the minimalist rock of Bedhead and Codeine. Having played past shows with bands including Charalambides, Birchville Cat Motel, Peter Wright, Auto Da Fe and Hush Arbors, Gareth has just completed a 10 date European tour incorporating Belgium, France and Spain. Plans for the next year include releases in the US and Australia, as well as an album which promises to develop and explore his style yet further.
